Keeping Mealworms
Another of the great live foods available are the mealworms. These are the larvae of a tiny beetle and are rich in protein and fats. On the downside they have quite a lot of indigestible exoskeleton and they can, on rare occasions, eat their way out of the stomach of your pet!

Giant Mealworms - Morio Worm
On arrival the giant mealworms should be removed from the small tub and placed in to a larger one containing 2 inches of damp sphagnum peat. They should be stored at between 15C - 18C and will keep well for several weeks. The peat should be lightly sprayed to keep it moist but never wet. If keeping for more than three weeks then they will need feeding with bug grub and some cabbage.
Standard & Mini Mealworms
On arrival the mealworms should be removed from the small tub and placed in to a larger one containing 1 inch of dry bran or bug grub. They should be stored at between 12C - 18C and will keep well for up to 2 weeks. These mealworms are best used before two weeks as many of them will begin to pupate.
Feeding Mealworms
You can feed mealworms with 'Bug grub' is which contains bran, calcium and other minerals but no moisture. Make sure you obtain fresh supplies regularly as this type of mealworm quickly looses its nutritional value.
Feeding to your pet
If you feed your pet lizard, snake or amphibian on mealworms then you may want to consider removing the head first or at least giving it a good squash! Mealworms have strong jaws and can chew their way through your pets stomach and out through the body cavity. By removing the heads or killing them you will prevent this.Only those animals that don't chew and kill their prey first are at danger, things like frogs, newts, Axolotl and salamanders are the main pets at risk. You can also dust the mealworms with a vitamin supplement prior to feeding them to your pet as this will increase their nutritional value and provide additional calcium.
